Step-by-step guidance for measuring walls, doors, windows, services and appliances before planning new kitchen cabinets.
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a kitchen plan. A small error at the start can affect cabinet positions, worktops, appliances and finishing panels later, so it is worth measuring the room methodically before choosing units.
Measure the complete length of every wall that may contain cabinets. Take more than one measurement where possible because older rooms are not always perfectly square.
Mark the width and position of every opening, including the distance from the nearest corner. Note which way doors open so the kitchen layout does not block them.
Record sinks, water supplies, waste pipes, gas points, sockets, extractor positions and any other services that may affect where cabinets or appliances can go.
Measure appliances that will remain in the kitchen and note where integrated appliances are planned. Appliance positions often determine the cabinet layout around them.
Look for boxed-in pipes, chimney breasts, radiators, sloping ceilings and other features that reduce usable cabinet space.
Once the measurements are written down, recreate the room in the JD Greta Free Kitchen Planner. Add the fixed objects first, then begin positioning cabinets.
Check the room measurements again against the finished plan. Make sure doors and drawers can open, appliances have enough space, and the cabinet list matches the layout. If anything is uncertain, contact JD Greta before checkout.
